Virginia Carrera opposes the general increase of 8.7% in all water rates in Salamanca

The proposal of the Government team, on ordinance no. .7% on all rates, explains Virginia Carrera.

For the councilor of the Mixed Group, the drinking water supply and sewerage service must be considered an essential service, for which reason the municipal administration is obliged to guarantee access to it for all people, without anyone being deprived of adequate enjoyment for economic reasons.

“The establishment of a general price increase of 8.7% is unaffordable for a large part of the citizenry who is having to face significant inflation without a correlative increase in wages,” Carrera pointed out through a statement sent to the press.

On the other hand, he points out that it is necessary to face a gradual change in the consumption practices of a particularly important good such as drinking water, which cannot and should not be wasted. “We must be co-responsible with the demands of sustainability and solidarity uses of the common goods that the future of our planet and of humanity itself requires.”

The combination of these two requirements (guarantee of supply of an essential service and limitation of irresponsible consumption) “should lead us to consider a radical change in the whole of the ordinance, in which the guarantee of the service and responsible consumption prevail and that for on the contrary, it makes excessive consumption more expensive, which also does not correspond to the habitual use of families but rather with practices that exceed the limits of what we should consider an essential service”, Carrera said.

In the same way, it has presented allegations to the ordinance so that the rates are modified.
