According to Lebanese information, the Israeli army again carried out heavy air strikes in the south of Beirut on Saturday evening. Four “very violent” attacks were carried out against the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, reported the Lebanese state news agency NNA. AFP correspondents heard several explosions in southern Beirut and saw clouds of smoke rising there, and ambulances rushed to the scene.

It was reported that Israeli reconnaissance drones were flying low before the attack. The Israeli army had previously asked residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs to leave several residential areas there. This was necessary for the “own safety” of the residents and their families, the call said.

An AFP correspondent in the Sabra area, near Beirut’s southern suburbs, saw dozens of people on the streets. Some carried bags and fled on foot or on motorbikes as explosions sounded in the background.

The Lebanese army had already violently attacked the south of Beirut on Friday. The US news portal “Axios” and the Israeli portal “Ynet” reported, citing Israeli government officials, that a recent attack was directed against the top Hezbollah commander Hashem Safieddine. The Israeli army did not confirm these reports.

However, a senior Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Saturday that the pro-Iranian militia had lost contact with Safieddine since Friday night. Another source close to Hezbollah confirmed this. Safieddine was seen as a possible successor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, whom the Israeli army killed in an airstrike in Beirut last week.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah said its fighters pushed back Israeli soldiers early Sunday morning. It was said that the Israeli soldiers tried to enter the village of Blida in the border area. The Hezbollah fighters fired artillery shells at them and “forced them to retreat.”

At least five people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a mosque in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, medics said. It said 20 more people were killed.
