Prefect Frédérique Camilleri also announced the suspension of all public transport networks in Marseille from 7:00 p.m., following a meeting with the mayor of the city Benoît Payan, representatives of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, the Metropolitan Transport Network (RTM) and merchant federations.
The port and transport of fireworks or “any object likely to be used as a weapon by destination” will also be prohibited by order, said the police headquarters. The prefect had previously announced on Twitter reinforced controls from Friday followingnoon and “numerous” patrols throughout the evening to prevent possible new incidents or put an end to them.
“This night (Thursday to Friday) absolutely unacceptable overflows and violence took place”, denounced Friday morning the mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan, evoking 156 trash fires, “dozens of damaged businesses, for some vandalized and looted” and 14 burnt cars.
The incidents lasted part of the night from Thursday to Friday and pitted some mobile groups of young people once morest the police. Concentrated in the center of Marseille, and not in the many cities of the city, they injured 38 police officers, some of whom had to be hospitalized, and led to 56 arrests.
Several stores in the city center still bore the marks of the clashes on Friday morning, and some had visibly been robbed, in particular rue Saint-Ferréol, the large pedestrian shopping street near the Old Port, noted an AFP journalist.
The glass facade of the Alcazar library, the largest in the city, located in the central district of Belsunce, was also damaged, and was covered with wooden planks.
“The country is experiencing an extremely strong wave of violence and this morning (Friday) we must call for unity and calm. After the drama of Nanterre, which is a drama that cannot be described, the images of which have caused fear, amazement and incomprehension, justice must now pass and pass quickly (…) in order to “appease the spirits”, added Mr. Payan, elected in 2020 at the head of a large majority of union of the left.
“I call on everyone to unity, Marseille is a city of brotherhood, whose message must be heard, I want Marseille to be exemplary”, continued the elected official, also announcing the establishment of an “exceptional fund to help traders” affected by the clashes.
