  • After the corona pandemic, there was an increase in violent incidents in the children’s hospital in Eastern Switzerland.

  • Security personnel present at night were also able to partially calm the situation.

  • A multilingual poster regarding waiting times should also help.

In 2022, there were 50 reports to the security service regarding unruly behavior at the Eastern Swiss children’s hospital in St. Gallen. Two security employees have now been on duty at night for regarding six months to get the situation under control. The measure is now showing results.

Most incidents in pediatric emergencies

“In an emergency, parents are often full of worry and only see their own child,” says Willi Büchel from the security service at the Eastern Switzerland Children’s Hospital in St. Gallen. “In addition, there are sometimes challenges in communication in exceptional emergency situations, but also cultural differences and language barriers, which we have identified as problem areas.”

It is often male relatives who respond to waiting times with insults, insults and threats, for example. Most of the reports come from children’s emergencies, and the police even had to be called in several times, eight times in 2022 alone.

Expectations and impatience increase

“You shouldn’t generalize regarding nationality, all nationalities can cause problems,” says Büchel. Expectations and impatience are increasing in society as a whole.

The classic problem: Information regarding possible waiting times often leads to excitement and verbal abuse.

Multilingual poster should help

There is now training and support for employees to help them cope with challenging situations. In addition, a poster with information regarding waiting times in different languages has been hanging in the waiting room for some time.

It is unclear whether all incidents are actually recorded: “It is also entirely possible that not all incidents are reported; we assume that the number is unreported,” explains Büchel.

However, the numbers look better for 2023, with only 35 incidents reported. “The situation has improved thanks to the security guard who is also present at night; his presence alone often calms the situation,” says Büchel.
