Six inmates were killed during “unrest” that occurred Friday in a prison in Guayaquil, a large city in southwest Ecuador where violence between prisoners has left more than 430 dead since 2021, authorities announced.
“An event occurred” in one of the areas of Guayas 1 prison and “six deceased people were recorded,” said the prison administration (SNAI) in a press release. The prosecution, for its part, indicated that “security protocols are being carried out (…) in the face of the disturbances that occurred on Friday followingnoon”.
“In the coming hours, specialized military personnel will carry out the first incursions and reconnaissance in district 7, where the incidents are said to have started, to take control of the situation,” added the prosecution on X (formerly Twitter). Guayas 1 is one of five prisons that make up the large Guayaquil prison complex.
More than 400 deaths over the past two years
Inmates linked to drug trafficking regularly clash there to extend their power. The government claims that gangs of incarcerated drug traffickers are waging war for control of drug trafficking and that this increasing violence has left more than 430 prisoners dead since February 2021, including dozens dismembered or burned.
In the streets, the number of homicides quadrupled between 2018 and 2022, to a record 26 per 100,000 inhabitants, in this country which previously appeared as an island of peace in the region. In Ecuador, which has 16.9 million inhabitants according to the 2022 census, the homicide rate might rise to 40 per 100,000 in 2023, according to experts.
