A woman and a man in their twenties were killed Saturday evening and three people injured when their vehicle was targeted by Kalashnikov shots in the parking lot of a McDonald’s in Marseille, we learned from the parquet.

The three men, including the 22-year-old driver, were known “unfavorably to the justice system for drug trafficking and violence in the Toulon region,” he added. The two women, including the 25-year-old passenger, have no criminal record.

Among the injured, a 29-year-old man who received bullet holes in the chest is life-threatening, a woman had her thumb torn off and the third, a 19-year-old man, is only slightly injured.

On site, investigators found 7.62 caliber cartridge cases, used in particular for weapons such as Kalashnikovs.

The identity of the perpetrator(s) was not revealed but a vehicle, which might “probably” belong to them, was found shortly following burned near the scene of the shooting, said the prosecutor.

More than 45 dead

The perpetrators are on the run but a vehicle, which might “probably” belong to them, was found shortly following burned near the scene of the shooting, said the prosecutor.

These two new murders, whose link with the drug trafficking which plagues this city of 870,000 inhabitants but also a large part of the Mediterranean arc has not yet been formally established, come two weeks following the last homicide officially linked by investigators in the war between gangs for control of drug sales outlets in Marseille.

On October 29, a 29-year-old man known for drug trafficking was shot and killed in the 15th arrondissement of Marseille in what might amount to a settling of scores, said prosecutor Mr. Bessone.

A port city marked by strong inequalities, Marseille has been affected by drug trafficking for decades. But the level of violence for the control of drug sales outlets is increasing, as in other cities in France.

This violence has also officially resulted in three collateral victims to date: on May 10, a 43-year-old woman was shot dead in Saint-Joseph (14th arrondissement), on April 24, a 63-year-old man was shot at a snack bar located in next to a deal point in the city of Busserine (14th arrondissement) while he was playing cards and on September 12, a 24-year-old young woman died of her wounds following being shot with a Kalashnikov while she was was at home with his mother in a housing estate in the 10th arrondissement.

The previous city prosecutor, Dominique Laurens, spoke of a “bloodbath”.
