Violence in Argentina: a growing phenomenon. To do?

It is evident that in our country, and especially in urban areas of a certain magnitude, among which the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires stand out, that is, the AMBA, is where the growth of violence is most recorded. This violence among citizens is expressed in multiple forms and areas, especially on the street, in certain areas such as health care centers and hospitals, schools, means of transportation and other community settings in which citizens share the coexistence. The data from the investigation carried out by Voice and published in the article in the Society section of the PROFILE newspaper last Sunday show a society that is living in violent times. Four out of ten people witnessed fights or attacks on public roads according to this survey, an alarming figure. The study indicates that the street is a very unsafe place since it is there where the highest frequency of attacks due to conflicts in traffic or on public transport are recorded. Added to these are attacks in previously unimagined places such as schools and health care centers and hospitals. Those places, which enjoyed a high social value, including their staff in the case of health care centers that during the pandemic were recognized for their dedication and courage in the face of the risk of getting sick or dying, especially doctors and nurses. Now they are frequently attacked by patients or their relatives. They claim for their own attention or that of family or friends, they scold them and physically assault them when they consider that they did not receive adequate attention. In schools, mothers and/or fathers of students, now faced with a bad grade or another situation in which they believe that teachers or administrators, or both, acted badly, not only confront them verbally, they hit and physically assault them. This evidences a very aggressive social environment, of great intolerance, which leads people to attack others in the face of some fact that bothers them. The reasons are multiple and complex, but the reaction of intolerance grows and becomes more serious to the extent that there is much frustration over the fragile economic and social situation, and little hope of improvement. This is fueled by the conduct of those in government positions, as well as the politicians who are running for office in the next elections, and the repercussions that all this has in the media and social media, where it is even more serious due to the lack of filters and controls. This situation leads to extreme reactions, such as the car driver who, faced with a confrontation with another, reacted by hacking the windshield of the other car with an ax. There are many of these cases. This affects couples: we see an increase in gender violence that expresses this intolerance. This month femicides increased. For example, the woman murdered by her husband in front of hers, her 7-year-old son who later killed himself hugging her. He sent a message the day before on a cake that read: “I love you, but sometimes I want a picture of one person strangling another.” If someone in front of his message had helped him, maybe the femicide and his suicide would be avoided. Another case was that of the woman stabbed by her ex-partner in her workplace, she reported it and had an order not to approach. At the job they shared with her, they limited themselves to changing her shift to prevent them from crossing each other, this was not enough and that was another preventable death if the company aggressor had been separated from her. To reduce gender violence, we must also reduce social violence, it is everyone’s responsibility to stop feeding intolerance, especially those who govern and those who aspire to do so.
