Violence Against Family in Urk: Legal and Safety Issues

2023-12-31 16:30:00

In response to these acts of violence, the municipality of Urk took measures by installing camera surveillance around the abandoned house, reports the Bladna.nl website. This initiative aimed to prevent further disturbances to public order and ensure the safety of the neighborhood. Despite these efforts, the family, made up of the grandmother, parents and three minor children, decided not to return to Urk, feeling too vulnerable to resume a normal life in this town.

This case has its origins in the accusation brought once morest the minor son of the family, suspected of having burned Israeli flags in the village. The accusation triggered a police arrest, described as very turbulent by the family’s lawyer, Samira Buzhu, who noted that it helped reveal the family’s address to the attackers. Police have denied any abnormalities in the proceedings and say they tried to minimize the impact on the family.

The family continued to be the target of attacks, including stone-throwing and fireworks at their home, even following police cleared the young boy. These acts of harassment have increased due to social networks, where discussions on links between Urk and Israel have fueled a climate of tension. Despite preventive measures taken by the police, in particular the control of access routes to Urk, the family said they continued to feel a feeling of insecurity.

Faced with this situation, and following a visit from the mayor of Urk, the family made the decision to leave their home permanently. Currently, they live separately, while the children are home-schooled. Their lawyer criticized the attitude of the municipality and the police, arguing that the family should have received better protection. Despite the offer of new accommodation in Veenendaal, the family continues to look for a safer and more anonymous place.
