“As of Sunday, while Joe Biden had previously stated his intention to nominate Kamala Harris to be his running mate, Kamala Harris was not actually a candidate at all,” Trump attorney David A. Warrington wrote in the letter. “Kamala Harris is on the verge of committing the largest campaign finance violation in American history and is using the Commission’s own forms to do it.”
FEC commissioners and campaign finance lawyers have spent the past two days arguing about the legitimacy of the handover in public statements and on social media. Hours after President Biden withdrew from the reelection campaign on Sunday, he rebranded three of his fundraising entities after Harris. Those three, a committee now called Harris for President and two joint fundraising committees, had more than $159 million in cash at the end of June, according to FEC filings. Harris’s campaign said on Tuesday that the vice president raised another $100 million in less than 36 hours.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk denied donating $45 million a month to Trump’s presidential campaign, explaining that the amount of his donations is “at a much lower level,” the owner of X said in an interview with conservative commentator Jordan Peterson.
