Vingegaard knocks out the competition

Already in the yellow jersey of the Critérium du Dauphiné, Jonas Vingegaard further increased his lead on the eve of the final finish, by winning the 7th stage at the top of the Col de la Croix de Fer. None of his rivals were able to keep up with the Dane.

Jonas Vingegaard is in top form three weeks before the start of the Tour de France, and the Dane did not miss the opportunity to let his rivals know! Already leader of the Critérium du Dauphiné, the Dane increased his lead by winning the penultimate stage, at the top of the Col de la Croix de Fer. While his Jumbo-Visma team had set a hellish pace at the foot of the pass, the winner of the 2022 Tour accelerated 5.3km from the finish, and no one managed to follow him. Neither the trio of Australians Ben O’Connor-Jai-Hindley-Jack Haig, nor the Briton Adam Yates. Impressively easy, Vingegaard finally won with 41 seconds ahead of Yates and 53 over Hindley, to clinch, at 26, the 22nd victory of his career, the tenth of his season.

Martin best Frenchman of the day

Ben O’Connor finished more than a minute behind, so that the leader of AG2R-Citroën is no longer the Dane’s runner-up in the general classification. It is indeed Adam Yates who is now second, 2’11 behind Vingegaard who, barring an incident or a very serious failure on Sunday in the Col du Granier, the Col de Porte or the final climb of the Bastille in Grenoble, seems to have race won. On the French side, it was Guillaume Martin who signed the best performance of the day by finishing seventh, but he is still second overall for the French, behind Julian Alaphilippe, seventh at 3’48 from the leader. David Gaudu meanwhile confirmed his difficulties of the week by finishing three minutes behind Vingegaard. Worrying three weeks before the Grand Départ of the Tour…

Campenaerts brille and montagne

The other hero of this stage with 4000m of elevation gain was Victor Campenaerts. The Belgian from the Lotto-Dstny team, a time trial specialist, enjoyed a nice ride in the mountains, passing the Col de la Madeleine and the Col du Mollard, classified out of category. Escaped at the 21st kilometer with Rémi Cavagna (Soudal Quick-Step), Madis Mihkels (Intermarché-Circus-Wantty) and Anthony Perez (Cofidis), he set off alone two kilometers from the top of the Madeleine and was only caught twelve kilometers from the finish. A beautiful day that will allow him to wear the best climber’s jersey during the last stage.
