Known to his friends as “Lechuga”, Matte was CEO in Chile of Methanex Corporation, a Canadian company that supplies and markets methanol throughout the world. Upon leaving this high corporate position, in 1991, he built a house for himself in Pirque and formed Viña Haras de Pirque, as well as a horse farm.
Partnered with the Antinori family, one of Italy’s leading wine producers, to whom in 2017 he sold the vineyard. The horse farm was bought by the Heller family. He traveled by helicopter between Pirque, Zapallar and his field in Riñihue, where he has a house on the lake and a plantation of European hazelnut trees. He also sold urbanized land in Pirque, a business that was managed by his son Luis Matte Blackburn.
