Like a game of chess, Vincent Trocheck delivered the final blow by checkmate the Carolina Hurricanes in the second overtime period, Tuesday night, to take a 2-0 series lead.
Trocheck pounced on a loose puck to score the team’s fourth goal in a 4-3 victory to rouse the crowd at Madison Square Garden.
A shot from the corner of the tables was blocked by Frederik Andersen who moved to save. Out of position, the goalkeeper didn’t see the puck drop in front of him and the Rangers forward squeezed it between his legs to start the celebration.
Trocheck scored in a fifth straight game and sends the series to Raleigh on Thursday with a 2-0 advantage for the Rangers.
The hero of the evening was unable to describe following the game how he felt following the goal. He also quickly returned to earth with the task that remained to be performed.
“This feeling is incredible, but you don’t get carried away. We have to win two more. We have to focus on the next game,” he said.
He wasn’t the only New York player to shine in this game. Alexis Lafrenière scored his first two goals of the current series and Artemi Panarin finished the night with three assists. It is also impossible to ignore the 54 saves goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin has made.
The defeat is obviously painful for the Hurricanes. Andersen stopped 35 pucks and Sebastian Aho was complicit in each of the team’s goals.
Lafrenière surprised Andersen with a wrist shot following collecting the puck in the faceoff circle to the right of the Hurricanes net to make it 1-0 at 10:53.
Moments later, Andrei Svechnikov was penalized for knocking his skates off Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who was retrieving the puck behind his net. Svechnikov brought the goalkeeper down spectacularly with his left leg. The numerical advantage did not allow the Rangers to increase their lead.
Jake Guentzel tied the game when he deflected a shot from the blue line off the stick of Sebastian Aho at 15:07 to make it 1-1.
Then with 5.4 seconds left in the first period, Dmitry Orlov put the Canes ahead for the first time in the series when he skillfully directed the puck into the Rangers cage.
Lafrenière tied the game with his second of the game when he headed a pass into the enemy net to make it 2-2 in the second period.
Forgotten in front of the net, Guentzel had no trouble giving the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead thanks to his second of the game at 18:16 of the middle period.
In the third, Chris Kreider evened the odds on a power play to 3-3. He scored by taking a throw back.
The Hurricanes had their chances to end overtime with two power plays. Jacob Trouba was in the penalty box in the first overtime and in the fourth minute of the second overtime it was Panarin who deprived his team of a player on the ice.
A little more than three minutes following Panarin’s penalty, Brady Skjei found himself in the penalty box for a double check behind the back of Trocheck, who fell to the ice. After 7 minutes and 24 seconds in the period, the attacker got revenge by making the red light flicker.
