The biggest news in the world of professional wrestling right now is the return of Vince McMahon to the WWE Board of Directors and a potential sale of the company. News that topped Sasha Banks’ return to NJPW which had been news since early 2023.
On the subject, Jim Cornette released a bonus episode of his Jim Cornette Experience podcast this week, just to discuss McMahon. Highlights of the discussion can be found below.
Cornette on his reactions to the news:
“He might just do that, apparently from the start, so I’m not sure why it took him so long. But I’ll tell you, let’s analyze what’s going on here, guys. But motivation comes down to a couple of things. Either they were planning to sell the company this year, with the media rights and he said, nobody’s going to do that but me, or he’s decided now, like Vince often does when he has an idea in his head, that it’s the right thing to do, that they’re going to explore sales and media rights at the same time and nobody’s going to do it but him. But somehow, when someone hands another motherfucker a check for five billion dollars, that other motherfucker who receives it will be Vince McMahon. I can’t blame him. This is his harvest, he planted the seeds, he watered them, he cultivated the soil, he did all that and now by God he’s going through hell with britches of gasoline to make sure that no one but him receives this check.
Cornette on whether Vince should run WWE following a sale of the company:
“You know, if he was younger, Vince must still be a bit realistic somewhere deep down. If he was younger I think it would be almost a certainty but at this point does he just want the final I’m gonna wipe it off the face of the board and everyone told me to retire, I will come back, stocks will skyrocket. We’re going to sell this thing. Somebody’s gonna give me five billion dollars and then, boom, and I’m onto my next thing. Yeah, I don’t know at this point if he would say, I have to be, you know, that would be a sticking point on the deal, I have to be in charge.
“I will say right now, he wants the big check and he wants to be in charge of the sale and he wants to take the glory at this point. I think he might realize that this is coming to an end, one way or another. Because here it is, would Vince rather run the company for another five years and only get two billion dollars for it or would he rather get five or six billion now that’s the total on the catch-all board for Vince, he would consider that a bigger win than if he ran her longer and got less. He really would, he would consider he did a better job, so it wouldn’t be like, I failed, it would be like, I’m doing a better job doing this. Now is better, world conditions and duty fees and everything, it’s time. »
Cornette on whether Vince would scare away wrestlers who returned to WWE:
“Well, I think they’re probably all freaking out, but in all honesty, I think that’s the least of their problems. Vince isn’t coming back to fix the fucking creation. Vince is coming back to sell that son of a bitch. And this year, they’re going to review media rights deals and try to get more money from whoever. They’re obviously now going to entertain suitors to buy the thing, outright. Do you think Vince is gonna come back like, damn Johnny Gargano is on RAW, damn it, homie? Back then, if the creative wasn’t good and the ratings weren’t good, the ticket sales, the PPVs weren’t good. I don’t know if he will have time. I think if it took long enough he probably would get there but I think the main goal and especially with people trying obviously I don’t mean undermine but not letting that happen even if it’s happened before, apparently, the people who were once morest it, he’s gonna have to navigate all that shit. If it was a few more years, yeah, he’ll probably get there, but I think at this point he’s going to focus on the main things to make this as valuable as possible.
Will he convince Steve Austin to come back and do something? Will John Cena reappear? The Rock, are we gonna throw money at him? He’s going to prioritize the main shit, as well as spending all his time with the lawyers, negotiators, accountants and all that kind of stuff. I don’t think he’s going to micromanage creation once more in two weeks. It’s a big problem. It’s bigger than the boys right now. Here’s the thing, they can benefit if stocks are already up, people want a sale, apparently. It’s not like they wanted Vince to take over, they wanted a sale. So if they give them a sale, the business will be worth more money, maybe more real world business will treat the talent better from a financial standpoint or a benefits standpoint or whatever . But also a complete entity that is completely removed from wrestling, even if Triple H is still there, if Stephanie is still there, whatever, they can turn it into a clown show to make AEW look like Mid-South Wrestling , so who knows. But I don’t think the boys who came back because they didn’t want to be booked by Vince are currently going to have anything to worry regarding. It’s bigger than that.
