This is a new initiative and there will be trial selections for one or two sports next year. In 2025, after making the necessary improvements and corrections, the financing procedure is planned to be adapted to a larger or the entire number of sports, the municipality announced on Wednesday.
Next year, 400,000 will be allocated to organizations that train athletes. euros for baskets for young athletes. Another 50 thousand EUR is expected to be allocated to athletes’ scholarships for high achievements in the field of sports.
“It is important not only to spot talents in time, but also to consistently and systematically invest in the development of their potential, additional motivation and the opportunities of educational organizations. Targeted funding for young athletes will enable them to purposefully improve their skills in order to achieve high sports results and promote the name of the capital city”, – Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas is quoted in the report.
According to the municipality, so far the main source of funding for sports organizations that educate young athletes has been non-formal education baskets, but the training of high-achieving athletes is more intensive than non-formal education activities focused on employment and requires more funds.
The young athlete’s basket will be awarded only to the applicant who has the groups of mastery development, mastery development and high mastery stages, and for participation in competitions scheduled for a specific sport in the previous calendar year.
Legal entities registered in the territory of the capital will be able to apply for funding, funding will not be provided to institutions subordinate to the municipality. The young athletes being educated will have to be registered in the student register of the city of Vilnius.
The funding will be distributed during the tender, the terms of which will be announced next year.
In order to encourage talented and promising athletes to improve their skills and achieve high sports results, athletes will also be awarded scholarships worth 50,000. euros. Scholarships will be awarded for sports achievements to individual or team athletes who represent Vilnius and Lithuania in international sports competitions.
Applications may be submitted by legal entities registered in Vilnius for at least one year, who have signed a sports education contract with the athlete, with the exception of institutions subordinate to the municipality.
Scholarships for athletes aged 14-29 will be awarded for the best result achieved in the previous year, after participating and taking appropriate places in specific competitions. Scholarships calculated according to the established criteria will be paid to the athlete for a year.
