Vilnius gallery weekend changes habits: the program is prepared by galleries and their curators | Culture

Since 2016, Vilnius Gallery Weekend has symbolically marked the beginning of the exhibition season. On September 5-8, as every year, this event aims to draw attention to the wide panorama of contemporary art in the capital, encourages exhibition visitors to discover new points on the cultural map, and experience the viewpoints presented by guest curators.

This year, VGS has changed its direction – to curate the art weekend program, it will now invite galleries and art spaces together with their curatorial teams. The one-piece gallery “apiece” and its founders M.Černiakaitė and A.Trakšelytė became the first team.

This year, the curators of the ninth VGS proposed to focus on the theme of HABITS. Their idea is a program based on exchange, new habits of communication and cooperation, inviting to expand the concept of spaces that present art, to rethink the purpose or principles of operation of art organizations.

The curators of the weekend say that this habit-changing provocation is also aimed at exhibition visitors, who may be pleasantly surprised by a different exhibition from the usual gallery exchange, as well as the opportunity to discover new, less visited galleries in Vilnius.

Change of habits, nomadism and mobility are no strangers to the curators of the “apiece” gallery. Since 2018, M. Černiakaitė and A. Trakšelytė have organized one-piece exhibitions on Didižioja Street. When he lost the showcase window there, he wandered with “apiece” between Vilnius and Palanga, until in 2021 he stayed in a showcase building of small architecture in Naujamiestis.

The curators say that despite their permanent location, they continue to travel, but not with spaces, but with activities – they participate in various projects, organize gallery exchanges with similar spaces abroad, and invite other curators to hold “apiece” exhibitions.

During VGS, seven galleries decided to exchange spaces for one exhibition: “InTheCloset” exchanges with “Offshore Eyes”, “Rooster Gallery” – with “apiece”, VDA Outdoor Expo – with the “5 mills” exhibition space.

The HABIT program was also interesting for the museum institution – the National Museum of Lithuania plans to join the exchange program, which plans to exhibit the works of artist Robert Narkaus in four departments. They will be presented by the “Vartai” gallery.

On September 5-8, Vilnius city galleries, as well as museums that do not participate in the habit-changing exchange, join the common VGS program and invite visitors to new exhibitions, special events or offer various discounts.

Instagram accounts are also joining the VGS project this year avocado_ibuprofen creator. Since 2017, the account has hosted original comics, texts and memes. A social network account with more than 115,000 followers suggests that its content responds to today’s current affairs: the meaning of social networks in today’s information overload, the role of galleries in the 21st century and the life of an artist today. In one form or another avocado_ibuprofen also questions the topics of habits, disregarding the norms of normal behavior and not lacking humor.

In the month of July avocado_ibuprofen resided in the Sodas 2123 artist residency program, where he got to know the city’s galleries, their features and the art community. It was in the residence, in cooperation with designer Gaile Pranckūnaite, communication specialists Stefanija Jokštyte and Egle Trimailovaite, that the VGS visual identity and event attributes began to be created.

VGS will be held on September 5-8.
