The new collection schedule once a week rather than twice in the Ville-Marie borough does not suit merchants who deplore a lack of solutions offered by the City.
In this sector of Montreal, the Tuesday collection is maintained, while the Friday collection has been replaced by a compost collection since the beginning of the month.
The City justifies this measure by explaining that approximately half of what ends up in the garbage cans can be thrown in the compost.
But merchants have to deal with a surplus of waste and have to find ways to store it.
“The City gives us the solution simply to have a cold room built at great expense to store the garbage, but we don’t have the space for that,” says the owner of the Saint-Bock brewery, Martin Guimond.
“Otherwise we can put our garbage in the fridges that are used to store customers’ food, I don’t think customers are very happy that we keep compost next to their tomatoes and burgers,” he continues. he.
Several merchants on rue Saint-Denis, in the Latin Quarter, have decided to store their garbage in the alley behind the commercial artery.
This situation has the effect of exacerbating the problem of rats in Montreal, which have a field day in the garbage of merchants.
The City of Montreal did not accept our interview request to comment on this new measure.
