Xavi Hernandez and Unai Emery haven’t always been in agreement, especially following a heated debate when the pair met on the sidelines earlier this season. Yet they both know how to recognize a good management tool when they see one. Both use and have invested in a company that is developing new video analytics software. This new technology analyzes the game itself and identifies interesting tactical situations to automatically provide coaches with the corresponding sequences.

The company in question, Kognia, also counts former FC Barcelona coach Joan Vila and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas among its investors.. Sport claims its technology is capable of detecting more than 200 situations per game, depending on the players and their form, right up to when the forwards are out running or the wings are overloaded. The business started in a student flat in Barcelona in 2008 and has since moved to the suburban Sant Just Desvern near Barcelona’s training center in Sant Joan Despi. With both managers having enjoyed successful seasons so far, it looks like their analysis is proving useful.
