A famous Vietnamese noodle vendor known for ‘Salt Bay’, a celebrity chef who mocked a top government official, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison. The conviction is the latest in what rights groups say is a broader government effort to silence voices critical of the ruling Vietnamese Communist Party.
A video of Bui Thuan Lam, 39, went viral in November 2021. A Vietnamese officer was caught on camera eating a gold-plated steak at the Turkish chef’s London restaurant. When the video was posted days later, her real name was Nusret Gokse.
Lam, who described himself as ‘green onion bay’ in a Facebook post along with the video, was arrested late last year. He was convicted on Thursday of ‘making, storing, distributing or disseminating information, documents and materials once morest the state’ and sentenced to prison following a one-day trial, the Danang Police Department said.
