According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Tokyo, on January 27, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) announced that by the end of October 2022, the number of foreigners working in the country reached a record high. 1822,725 people, an increase of 5.5% compared to the same period in 2021.

MHLW said that out of over 1.82 million foreigners working in Japan, the largest number of Vietnamese nationals is 462,384 people, accounting for 25.4%. Followed by Chinese citizens (385,848 people, accounting for 21.2%) and the Philippines (206,050 people, accounting for 11.3%).

On the recruitment side, the number of establishments employing foreign workers hit a record high to 298,790, up 4.8%, of which business establishments with less than 30 employees accounted for 61.4%. By status of residence, the number of foreign workers with expert and engineer visas increased by 21.7% to 479,949 and the number of people with permanent resident status or spouses of Japanese citizens increased by 2.6% to 595,207 people.

Meanwhile, the number of foreign technical intern trainees decreased by 2.4% to 343,254 people. This is the second year in a row that the number of technical interns in the country has decreased, partly due to border control measures taken by the Japanese Government to control the COVID-19 epidemic.

Geographically, Tokyo is home to the largest number of foreign workers, with 500,089 people. It is followed by Aichi Prefecture in the central region with 188,691 people and Osaka Prefecture in the west with 124,570 people.
