“I have been with the Vietnamese team for 5 years. Unfortunately, the players only finished second in the AFF Cup 2022, but they tried their best. I regret that the Vietnamese team might not win, but I am grateful to the players. It hurts to say goodbye, but there is a meeting and parting is inevitable“, Coach Park Hang Seo shared regarding his decision to leave the Vietnamese team following 5 years of working.
The Korean leader’s contract with VFF will close following January 31. Therefore, AFF Cup 2022 is Coach Park Hang Seo’s last tournament with Vietnamese football.
After 5 years of training, Mr. Park won 3 titles at the national team and U23 levels, including the 2018 AFF Cup championship, 2 gold medals at the 30th and 31st SEA Games and many brilliant achievements at the continental level such as a silver medal. U23 Asia 2018, fourth place ASIAD 18 or reached the final qualifying round of the World Cup 2022.
According to coach Park Hang Seo, he left the Vietnamese team when both he and the players needed a change. “The Vietnamese team needs to develop, while I myself have to innovate. I’m looking for another path for myself“, Coach Park Hang Seo confirmed.
“I was thinking regarding leaving with or without a win following 5 years of coaching. I have achieved my goal of being in the top 100 in the FIFA rankings. The next coach of the Vietnam team will have his own goals, but my mission is over“, Coach Park Hang Seo said.
Mr. Park affirmed that he did not think he might coach the Vietnamese team for more than 1 year. Before the Korean coach, foreign strategists working in Vietnam often did not stay for more than 3 years.
“I used to think I might only work for 1 year, but actually worked for 5 years. It’s been longer than I thought“, Coach Park Hang Seo said.I tried my best to get recognized. Looking back, I see myself as lacking a lot. There are difficulties and there are people who criticize me“.
The 64-year-old military leader also emphasized that he will not be in charge of training in Korea or Vietnam following parting with the Vietnamese team.
