Vienna – There is still plenty of room for improvement in Vienna when it comes to expanding German language support in early childhood. Figures from the Vienna ÖVP drew attention to this in spring 2022, according to which many children born in Vienna often speak German so poorly that they are classified as non-standard pupils in elementary school – and need German support measures. Half of these 10,484 school children had to attend a German remedial class in 2021/22. Education councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos) responded to this imbalance with additional language support staff in kindergartens. A measure that was already recorded in the red-pink government agreement.
