Vienna (OTS) – When cold weather and snow comes, the city has to reconcile traffic safety and environmental protection. And the 48er, which is responsible for winter service on Vienna’s roads, is best prepared for this. Up to 1,400 trained employees and 280 clearing and spreading vehicles are ready for use at any time.
Global technological pioneer
When it comes to winter service, the 48 is one of the technological pioneers – worldwide. Years of development and optimization go into the vehicles, equipment, the selection and use of gritting agents, the logistics and also the regular training courses.
Investments have been made for a long time in state-of-the-art equipment such as the double blade plow and combination spreader for wet salt and brine. The vehicle fleet is gradually being converted from wet salt spreading to brine, and new equipment is equipped with additional spreading bars. “The city of Vienna’s winter service is really top, especially when it comes to efficiency and economy in the use of grit. Every year it is important to ensure traffic safety while at the same time reducing environmental impacts to a minimum – as little as possible and as much as necessary,” says Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky.
Salt spreading: efficient and economical
With their gritting and clearing vehicles and the associated technology, the 48s cover the entire cold spectrum: Most missions are carried out at temperatures around 0°, and brine is used here. If it is colder, you switch to wet salt and vice versa. All gritting and clearing vehicles have spreading structures using the latest wet salt and brine technology. This means they offer the most efficient, economical and environmentally friendly method of salt spreading: the moistened grit sticks to the road and is not blown away or thrown to the side. The environmental impact is significantly reduced while the effectiveness remains the same; the dew effect remains at temperatures down to -15°C. The amount released is significantly less compared to previous devices, which also reduces particulate matter pollution in the city.
Important: personal responsibility of the Viennese
If there is snow and/or ice, the 48ers advocate the personal responsibility of each individual: please wear winter footwear, walk carefully and adjust your driving speed to the winter conditions – and winter can come.
