The Wiener Symphoniker are going to unusual concert locations today. They perform in ten pubs in Vienna-Wieden with free entry. Ten ensembles each play three concerts. Musically, it ranges from baroque to swing to German rap.

Without tails, but with a lot of music in their luggage, the ensembles of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra make their way through the pubs around Schleifmühlgasse in the fourth district. The kick-off takes place at 6 p.m. in the Neruda Kulturraum on Margaretenstraße. It is played by the duo Grüner Wiads Ned. It should be musical enjoyment in a relaxed atmosphere, says cellist Maria Grün. “We are really looking forward to our Viennese audience.” She plays together with her husband Oliver Madas.

Then there are hourly concerts in ten bars. In the Cafe Vollpension there is Schrammeln, in the Pizzeria Pinsatore a hip-hop brass combo plays, in the Cafe Armacord a classical quartet. The performances are repeated, so the location can be changed between the concerts during the breaks. Closing takes place at 10pm at Johnny’s Pub.

With this action, the symphonic orchestra want to follow their founding idea, says artistic director Jan Nast. “We see it as our task to make music accessible to everyone. The way to the pubs around the Schleifmühlgasse is intended to enable the Viennese to meet our musicians in a relaxed atmosphere or to meet them once more in a relaxed atmosphere.”
