Vienna State Opera: The Death of Love: scenically mau, musically by no means wow

Gustav Mahler was perhaps the most important artistic figure in the history of the Vienna State Opera (at that time still a court opera), but he never composed an opera himself. In order to allow Mahler to get some scenic honors, one manages to bring together his early work “Das klagende Lied” with the eminent “Kindertotenlieder” directed by Calixto Bieito.
