Thousands of people of Turkish migrant background took to the streets in Vienna on Sunday to celebrate the re-election of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prompting sharp criticism from the right and concern from the left.

As in other countries where people of Turkish background live, most of the 100,000 people of Turkish background living in Austria voted for Erdogan (74 percent) on Sunday evening, the Turkish news agency reported. After Erdogan’s victory, hundreds took to the streets, blocking traffic and in some cases using pyrotechnics, media reported.

“When, following the victory of the controversial Turkish President Erdogan, thousands of people suddenly paralyze traffic and public order to celebrate ‘their’ president, we are witnessing a further aggravation of the situation,” said Karl Mahrer, head of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). Vienna, on Monday.

Some of the people who took to the streets were accused of using the license plates of Turkey’s far-right Gray Wolves gang.

Similar statements have been made by the extreme right.

“If Erdogan is such a great president, then you should live in the country where he rules. Off to Turkey with these people,” said Dominik Nepp, head of the Viennese FPÖ.

Among the reasons for Erdogan’s popularity in the Turkish diaspora are: Experts | poor integration and discrimination.

“Nationalism imported from abroad is the opposite of integration and has no place with us,” emphasized Integration Minister Susanne Raab from the ruling conservative ÖVP.
