Vienna Pride starts once more today. Until June 18, the series of events aims to celebrate the visibility and diversity of people in the LGBTIQ+ community. The events on June 17th will be particularly colourful: that is when the rainbow parade will take place on the Ring.

The motto of Vienna Pride this year is “Together we rise”. A total of over 50 events are planned, as reported by Pride organizer Katharina Kacerovsky-Strobl. A Pride Run in the Prater is scheduled for June 3rd. A “Pool Day” in the Schönbrunn Palace Baths and a Cinema Night have also been announced.

The Pride Parade on June 17 starts at 1 p.m. and proceeds counter-clockwise around the ring as usual. The start is in front of the town hall square. A “community village” will also be set up on this, which will serve as a meeting place. The festival following the parade – the so-called Pride Celebration – will also take place there. The town hall will play an important role in Pride month this year. There will be a reception in the Arkadenhof on June 15th. The day following, a conference in the rooms of the town hall is on the agenda.

Reduce prejudice

With the Pride one also wants to set an example once morest protests by right-wing groups once morest the community, the city said at the program presentation in May. For example, a drag queen was demonstrating once morest a children’s book reading. One wants to break down fears and prejudices and stand up for diversity.

However, it is not only important to resist radical opponents, but also to support demands. Because there was still a lot to do on a legal level, it was said at the time. It is important, for example, to improve protection once morest discrimination or to introduce hate crime monitoring at federal level.

A memorial to people who were persecuted by the National Socialists because of their sexual orientation and murdered in concentration camps is to be unveiled in Resselpark in June.

Numerous companies are publicly showing solidarity with the LGBTIQ+ community. From Thursday, Wiener Linien will be flying the rainbow progressive flag. With this they want to support the LGBTIQ+ community (English abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intergender, queer and other gender identities) as well as “People of Color” in Pride Month, it was said. The pumices are said to be flying the Pride flags throughout June.

The Viennese schools are also setting an example: Rainbow flags are to be hoisted in front of or at around 175 schools next to the education department. In the run-up to this, workshops of the Flagincluded project had taken place at many schools.
