In terms of content, an arc should be drawn from French Romanticism to Impressionism. “For the first time we have included a work by Lili Boulanger in the programme,” announced Daniel Froschauer, director of the Vienna Philharmonic. “A touching depiction of nature by the young composer and first female prizewinner of the renowned Prix de Rome in 1913.”
This composition will be dedicated to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This was signed 75 years ago and strengthened 30 years ago at the Vienna World Conference on Human Rights with a concrete program of action (for human rights). “Today, a clear commitment to human rights is more important than ever,” emphasized Froschauer.

“Shadow beings” on the facade of the palace
The program also includes works by Hector Berlioz and Maurice Ravels – such as his most famous piece “Boléro”. The youth company of the Vienna State Ballet will dance to the sounds behind the stage – and become visible as “shadow creatures” on the palace facade. At the end of the concert, as is tradition, there will be a homage to the city of Vienna with Johann Strauss’ waltz “Wiener Blut”.
The Canadian-French conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is conducting the Summer Night Concert for the first time. It is also a debut for the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča – as a soloist she sings three arias from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Charles Gounod’s Sapho and Camille Saint-Saën’s Samson et Dalila.
Strollers and animals prohibited
After the New Year’s Concert, the Summer Night Concert is the world’s most broadcast classic event. This year it can be seen in more than 80 countries. The concert begins on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Visitors are strongly recommended to arrive by bike or public transport. Bicycle parking spaces will be set up on the Schönbrunn Palace Bridge.
Only the Hietzinger Tor and the Meidlinger Tor should be used to access the palace gardens, with exceptions for invited guests and people with restricted mobility. It is forbidden to take chairs, picnic blankets and prams with you, as escape routes must be kept clear. Animals are also not allowed to be brought to the concert.
Greens call for a quota for women
The Viennese Greens criticized in advance that the concert will once more be conducted by a man. Since the summer night concerts began in 2004, not a single woman has conducted, and Elīna Garanča is only the fifth soloist in almost 20 years. The Greens are therefore demanding that the City of Vienna’s funding for the concert be tied to gender quotas in the future.
