It is a project with a history spanning decades. The Lobau Tunnel is the last section to close the regional ring around Vienna. The ÖVP put forward the proposal for a northeast bypass in Vienna as early as 1994.
State party chairman City Councillor Karl Mahrer states: “We need the north-east bypass and the Lobau tunnel. It completes the existing overall concept of the road ring around Vienna. This is what we as the People’s Party have been fighting for since 1994. There has been a legal mandate since 2006. Minister Gewessler stopped the planning at the end of 2021, although the Lobau tunnel has long been approved and is the best-tested road project in Austria. The SPÖ cannot be relied upon on this issue: Andreas Babler says something different than Michael Ludwig. It seems that political ideology takes precedence over the will of the people and existing laws.” And Mahrer continues: “The Lobau tunnel must be an integral part of the next government program. A vote for the People’s Party is a vote for the Lobau tunnel!”
Without the Lobau tunnel, residents of Donaustadt will sink into traffic chaos
National Councillor and District Party Chairwoman of Donaustadt, Gudrun Kugler explains: “In contrast to Mr. Babler or Ms. Gewessler, we are right here in Donaustadt, where we experience the challenges every day. Through traffic and traffic jams are omnipresent – as far as the eye can see. And we are not even talking about future developments in the district, but only about the current status quo. In the next few years, many new residents will be added, and with them a large number of new jobs. This massive increase in people and traffic simply cannot be managed without an urgently needed city bypass. We need the Lobau tunnel to close the gap and provide a necessary infrastructure measure so that the people of Donaustadt do not sink into traffic chaos.”
Last section must be built
“The S1 Vienna outer ring expressway between Schwechat and Süßenbrunn, including the Lobau tunnel, is already legally anchored in the Federal Highways Act as a gap-filling measure in the regional ring around Vienna. In Austria there are 2,249 kilometers of motorways and expressways, the eastern bypass has a total of 19 kilometers, 8.2 of which are Lobau tunnels. This last section, which separates the people of Vienna from freedom from transit traffic, must be built. The people of Vienna and eastern Austria need clear solutions. For us as a People’s Party, it is clear: Vienna’s future needs the Lobau tunnel!” concluded transport spokesman in parliament, National Councilor Andreas Ottenschläger.
