Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner thanks all emergency services at the marathon and praises the smooth handling and cooperation of all emergency organizations.

Vienna (OTS) In addition to new records and top performances by the runners of the Vienna City Marathon, top performances are also achieved behind the scenes year following year – like every major sporting event, today’s was a special task for all emergency services. Interior Minister Karner therefore addressed special words of thanks to those women and men who made their contribution to a successful, internationally highly regarded event in these organizations:

“The close cooperation between the organizer, the Arbeitersamariterbund, many other emergency organizations and the Vienna police made a significant contribution to the successful completion of the marathon. All the tasks that this assignment entailed were solved with great professionalism and care. I would like to thank the hundreds of emergency services who were on duty this weekend.”

The 40th Vienna City Marathon on April 23, 2023 once more showed the functioning cooperation of all players involved in a smooth implementation of the Vienna City Marathon. In addition to many others, including all relevant emergency organizations, the police is a central component of the complex security construct that is absolutely necessary for this major sporting event. Around 350 police officers were on duty to ensure that the event ran safely and smoothly.

The Main Operations Center (MOC) was set up three years ago and is staffed by representatives of the organisers, the police, the rescue service, the fire brigade and steward commanders. As the security center and task force, the MOC acts as a link between all those involved and ensures that all forces are pooled and that communication is efficient. Thanks to the short lines of communication, possible problem situations can be quickly identified, avoided or resolved, and all affected organizations can act quickly and in a coordinated manner.
