Almost 40,000 registrations, two records and a great atmosphere in Vienna at the 40th edition of Austria’s largest active sports event
Vienna (OTS) – The last of the 39,871 registered participants have just crossed the finish line of the Vienna City Marathon in front of the Vienna Burgtheater. Samwel Mailu from Kenya with a new course record time of 2:05:06 hours and the Austrian Julia Mayer with a new Austrian record (ÖLV) of 2:30:42 hours provided the sporting highlights. Mayer improved the national record by a hair’s breadth by one second. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Magdalyne Masai celebrated overall victory in 2:24:12 hours. The best male Austrian runner was Andreas Vojta, who fell short of his expectations with a time of 2:19:27 hours.
Overall, the organizer’s first assessment was extremely positive
“We experienced a running festival like perhaps never before at the Vienna City Marathon. The atmosphere along the route and at the finish was simply enthralling. We are very happy that all the preparations and plans have resulted in such excitement throughout the city. The 40th anniversary will be remembered with excellence and great atmosphere. We hope that this will give many people the motivation to be active themselves and to take part in the run,” said VCM managing directors Kathrin Widu and Dominik Konrad.
The 40th Vienna City Marathon opened with an emotional running day on Saturday, April 22nd. With a new concept and a new 5 km run, this day became a highlight. The start and finish for the children’s runs and the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run have been moved to a common location on the ring road to the Burgtheater. A great hotspot of emotions was created here and on the adjacent town hall square. In addition, the Vienna 5K, a 5 km run on the ring road around the city center, took place for the first time as part of the VCM. Mayor Ludwig gave the first signal to start the VCM weekend at the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run.
The fastest runners were welcomed at the finish by Federal President Alexander van der Bellen and Sports Minister and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler. The Federal President presented the winners Samwel Mailu and Magdalyne Masai as well as the Austrian state champions Julia Mayer and Andreas Vojta with their medals and trophies.
Regarding the event, which, following more difficult years, had once more sent out an enormous impulse for running and physical exercise, he said: “The best thing regarding this year’s marathon is definitely that not only thousands of runners, but also the many thousands of spectators finally got a big one once more Festival of Sports can celebrate together. Everyone can take part, is cheered on and is proud when they achieve their personal goals.”
The 40th Vienna City Marathon took place without any incidents worth mentioning and in a sporty and enthusiastic atmosphere
In line with the warm temperatures, there were 276 interventions by the Arbeiter Samariter Bund medical service. Of these, 49 were hospital transports. Hundreds of thousands were present at over 30 hot spots and cheering zones at Austria’s largest running event to cheer on the runners and celebrate the winners on Vienna’s Rathausplatz and in front of the Burgtheater.
Precise and successful cooperation
“The event ran smoothly and with great precision thanks to the good cooperation of all organizations involved,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Losko. In order to make this event possible, tailored to all needs, the largest planning and traffic-related conception in Vienna is required every year. The VCM cooperates with 115 authorities and institutions.
