Defending champions EC Red Bull Salzburg suffered their second tough defeat in a row in the ICE Hockey League on Wednesday. Three days following a 1:8 debacle at the KAC, Salzburg had to admit defeat to the Vienna Capitals 0:4 (0:1,0:0,0:3) and thus missed a return to the top of the table. For Salzburg it was their third away defeat in a row, the Viennese ended their series of three ICE defeats in a row.

The match winners in the replay at the beginning of October, when the ice cooling went on strike in Vienna-Kagran, were Trevor Cheek and Hampus Eriksson, who each scored a brace. The American Cheek scored the first two goals (20th, 45th), the Swede Eriksson scored the last two goals within 35 seconds (56th, 57th/power play). Capitals goalie Sebastian Wraneschitz didn’t concede a goal for the first time this season. His team moved from second to last to eleventh place in the table.

The match was initially interrupted on October 1st before the start of the second third when the score was 2-0 for Salzburg and then abandoned following over an hour. The reason for the damage to the ice surface was a defective connector in the cooling hoses in the Steffl Arena. The game was rescheduled and restarted at 0-0.
