A few minutes later, an ambulance from SIARME (Comprehensive Rio Negro Emergency Medicine Care Service) arrived at the scene and the woman was transferred to the Zatti hospital.

After carrying out several studies, it was determined that she had no complications and she was discharged without complications.following the rescue of both firefighters who acted quickly and were congratulated by the Río Negro Police.

The Heimlich maneuver: how it is applied

This procedure was born by the American doctor Henry Heimlich in 1974. He looked for a way to apply pressure to the diaphragm of the choking person and that might help him expel the object causing the obstruction.

The maneuver is performed when a person has an obstructed airway. and it is common in children, although it can also occur in adolescents and adults.

A person who is choking cannot speak, cough, or breathe. and might turn gray or bluish in color. The Heimlich maneuver can help remove that item or food that obstructs the airways and is applied in the following way:

In babies:

– Place the baby face down, resting on the adult’s forearm or thigh transversely.

– With the same hand you hold your head and hold your jaw.

– With the other hand, five slaps are given between the two shoulder blades, with a lateral escape route, avoiding hitting the head.

– Turn the baby very carefully, holding his head.

– If the baby does not react, the adult should place two or three fingers (preferably the index and middle fingers) under the nipple line and perform five slow, deep compressions in the center of the sternum. This maneuver must be alternated until the object is unobstructed.

In children, adolescents and adults

– Hug the person from behind and under their arms.

– Place one of your hands in a closed fist four fingers above your navel, in the midline of your stomach.

– Place the other hand on the fist.

– Recline your body a little forward.

– Apply pressure on the abdomen in a backward and upward direction.

This maneuver can also be useful if we are alone

Grab a chair and stand behind it. Lean forward until you rest your abdomen on the backrest. It must be supported between the navel and the sternum. Press very hard on the backrest so that the stuck object or food comes out.
