The historic building known as the “Harry Potter castle”located in the city of Odessa in Ukrainewent up in flames following being hit by a missile loaded with cluster munitions.
International media and agencies accuse Russia of having carried out the attack, which in addition to causing a fire in the imposing castle, caused the death of five people and left around thirty people injured.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office considers that due to the type of missile, the intention of the attack was to kill as many Ukrainian civilians as possible.
Some of the victims were walking through the area at the time the device fell.
“The attack was carried out with an Iskander ballistic missile with cluster munition in the warhead. This is indiscriminate weaponry“, reads a statement from the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office, which adds that metal fragments and parts of the missile were found within a 1.5 kilometer radius.
Along with the statement, the Prosecutor’s Office has distributed a video in which the explosions of multiple submunitions usually used to destroy multiple targets located at a certain distance from each other are observed.
The head of the Odessa regional state administration, Oleh Kiper, confirmed that In addition to the five deaths, more than 30 people were injured, 25 of them hospitalized and six in critical condition.
Among the injured are children and a pregnant woman.
According to Odessa military expert Alexander Kovalenko, it is the first time Russia has used cluster munitions once morest the city.
“The idea of this type of ammunition is to hit a wide area, which is what happened in Odessa, only the hit was not directed at military targets but at civilian targets,” Kovalenko wrote on his social networks.
Kovalenko stated that there were no military objectives in the area.
Also called “Harry Potter Castle” houses the Odessa Law Academy, one of the main higher education institutions in Ukraine.
Various media shared video images showing different shots of the castle on fire.
Photographs of bloody corpses near the sea, on the road leading to the beach, also circulated on Ukrainian social networks.
As of this Tuesday, April 30, the Russian Army has not commented or confirmed responsibility for the attack on Odessa.
