A firestorm of reaction has erupted following Donald Trump’s staff decided to upload a video to their social media accounts that included the term “unified Reich”.
“What will happen following Donald Trump wins? What can we expect for America?” asks a voice-over in this 30-second video, released on Donald Trump’s Truth Social account, which features fictional newspaper headlines extolling the prosperity of the United States.
Newspapers carry headlines “Economy in full swing!” or even “Borders are closed” and one refers to the “creation of a unified Reich”.
The word “Reich” is generally used to refer to Nazi Germany.
There is no direct reference to Nazism in the video, but one can hardly see the purpose of this phrase. In these images, which have in the background blurred passages of text that look like newspaper articles, references are made to the First World War.
Trump has a “long history” of anti-Semitic behavior, Democratic President Joe Biden’s campaign team wrote in a scathing statement in response to the video.
“Donald Trump is not playing. He is telling America exactly what he intends to do if he takes power once more: run a ‘unified Reich’ as a dictator,” Democratic campaign spokesman James Singer wrote in a statement, accusing him of “a parody of ‘Mein Kampf.’ “, of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s political manifesto, and that he has “unbalanced behavior”.
According to the news website Politico, a member of Donald Trump’s team claimed that he did not see the word “Reich” before the release of these images.
Trump regularly claims that his rival Joe Biden has failed to curb anti-Semitism in the United States amid Israel’s war with the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
But the Republican candidate is sometimes criticized for resorting to Nazi-like rhetoric, particularly when he calls immigrants “parasites” who “poison the blood” of the United States.
