A meteor that was seen from all over Puerto Rico had the peculiarity that, as seen from the perspective of the western area of the Island, it seemed to come from the Moon.

“This was coincidental, as meteors actually disintegrate through the atmosphere very close to us, at a height of between 50 and 70 miles from the surface, while the Moon is located much more distant, thousands of miles away. miles from our planet”, explained the Caribbean Astronomical Society (SAC) about the space rock captured at 12:57 in the morning of Tuesday, May 2.

That morning the Moon was near its apogee or furthest point in its elliptical or oval orbit, some 243,059 miles (391,165 km) from Earth, the educational entity highlighted.

The SAC indicated that the meteor observed was caused by a disintegrating space rock. “There are still many people who call meteors ‘shooting stars’, but in reality they are fragments or rocks rubbing against our atmosphere and they did not escape from anywhere, but intercepted the Earth on their way through our Solar System “.

Although this meteor that was observed was a sporadic one, that is to say that it is not related to any meteor shower, it is anticipated that a few could be visible during the next few mornings, especially before dawn on May 5, 6 and 7.

Halley’s Comet passed our neighborhood for the last time in 1986 and will be returning in 2061. In the meantime, a few of the meteors it causes could be seen late these nights, between 2:30 am and 5:15 am. Although the SAC always suggests looking straight up, this time it recommends something different.

And it is that because the Moon will be present in the night sky these nights, it is recommended to observe from a reclining chair, but looking in the opposite direction from where we see the Moon, which could help to see some meteors.
