Indigenous people arrived in Bogotá to demand respect for their rights. Woman’s beating overshadows protest. Photo: Archive
In a video circulating on social media, you can see how Indigenous leader beats his would-be partner in front of some children from the community. The incident, which occurred on August 17, has generated rejection in different sectors of society.
The man, apparently in a state of intoxication, repeatedly hits the woman. Kicks, punches and pushes come and go, while she, in a state of defenselessness, only covers her face.

The most serious thing is that the person who carried out the attack would be, nothing more and nothing less, than Saúl Arias, one of the leaders of the Comprehensive Protection Unit (UPI) of the indigenous community of La Rioja, currently based in Bogotá, where they have mobilized with the aim of having their indigenous rights respected.
In the face of the grotesque images, the Secretary for Women of Bogotá, Laura Tami, made her department available to assist the victim, while stating that “in Bogotá we cannot tolerate violence against women. We reject the aggression against an Emberá woman and we call for all forms of violence against women and girls to be denaturalized.”

The incident has caused such a stir that even the mayor of the capital of the Republic, Carlos Fernando Galán, demanded that the authorities take action on the matter.
I ask the @FiscaliaCol to bring this aggressor to justice so that he can be captured as soon as possible. Abuse and mistreatment against a woman is an attack against all the people of Bogota.
We will continue to do what is necessary to ensure that the rights of women and children are respected…

“I ask the Attorney General to prosecute this aggressor so that he can be captured as soon as possible. Abuse and mistreatment against a woman is an attack against all the people of Bogota. The aggressor, apparently, is Saúl Arias Sintúa, one of the indigenous leaders at UPI La Rioja,” the president denounced on his X account.
