Started with individual grants, then expanded

In a video interview, Schafflinger told the story of the “Seilschaft” association. Inhöger’s observations in Nepal led to the founding of an association. At first, the man began to award individual grants privately, says Schafflinger. A little later, a group of Gasteiners went on a trekking expedition around the holiest mountain, Mount Kailash (6638 meters).

Around 50,000 euros in donations raised

“After we returned, we put on an exhibition about this expedition. And as part of that, we founded the association,” says Schafflinger. That was in 2003. Since then, the “Seilschaft” association has raised donations of around 50,000 euros, enabling around 120 children to receive a full school education. The special focus is still on the young Nepalese women. “We especially want to give them help to help themselves. With this investment in education, the young women should see themselves in a position to secure a better economic livelihood for the future,” says Schafflinger.

Established school library

The group of 35 to 40 Gastein residents spared no effort to continue raising funds. It feels like half the place is involved. On one occasion, the Bad Hofgastein elementary school donated the proceeds from their carnival parade to the association. He stocked up and set up a school library in the school in Nepal.

In addition to the membership fees, donations come from events such as the “Advent at the Farmers’ Market” – for which cookies are baked and Christmas decorations are made.

Greeting card campaign brought proceeds

A lot of money was also raised at the time through a book presentation by the Bischofshofen mountaineer Albert Precht (d. 2015). Or through a greeting card campaign as part of an expedition by Sepp Inhöger and the Dorfgastein family doctor Christian Buchsteiner to Broad Peak – at 8051 meters it is one of the 14 eight-thousanders and is the twelfth highest mountain on earth. People could order a postcard. Part of the proceeds from this benefited the “Seilschaft” association.
