The atmosphere is murky. The tension, almost unbearable. However, the horror saga Amnesia disappoints with The Bunkera new chapter launched three years following the excellent Rebirth.
1916. In the heart of the First World War, the French soldier Henri Clément falls into the hands of the Germans while trying to save one of his colleagues. First unconscious, he wakes up alone – or so he thinks – in a dark, disused bunker. With only a noisy dynamo flashlight, a bullet in the magazine of his revolver and a few trinkets found on his way, he will have to navigate this refuge concealing dark recesses from which a mysterious beast is watching him.
For his long-awaited The Bunkerto the saga Amnesia spawns off the beaten path of its previous entries by offering a semi-open world in which the player can move at their own pace and at their own pace. Free to explore its areas in the order you want, the final objective obviously remains the same: to get out of this shelter unscathed by solving puzzles and brainstorming.
Lack of nuance
But a more linear approach – prioritized in The Dark Descent, A Machine for Pigs et Rebirth – seems better suited to the universe ofAmnesia. The corridors of the bunker end up looking alike here and its different sections are cruelly devoid of nuances and distinctions.
The penumbra, an integral part of the plot, makes exploration less easy – this is obviously intended –, but also less pleasant. We often have the impression of going around in circles, running following our shadow, or simply being lost in a dead end. It must also be said that the controls, sometimes wobbly, weigh down the experience rather than enhance it. We struggled to perform maneuvers as simple as opening a door as they can be messy in different segments.
Passing emotions
The same goes for the graphics, which pale in comparison to what, for example, the Montreal studio Red Barrels does with Outlast, in the same slot. The creature lurking in the shadows is quite capable of making you jump, of course, but it will not haunt players’ nightmares once the controller has been dropped. The feeling of anxiety, omnipresent during the game, also fades quickly – if not instantly – once it is over. In short, for the lasting impact, we will come back.
Finally, Amnesia : The Bunker turns out to be a correct adventure that ends in less than three hours, but to which we will not submit a second time. Those who will be tempted to do so, however, will be happy to learn that the game comes to shuffle the cards with each new game. Certain elements – such as locker combinations – are indeed randomly modified each time a player starts a new journey.
