Current video game productions are facing a strike by SAG-AFTRA, which seeks to resist the use of AI that inevitably threatens their jobs.
SAG-AFTRA, the union of American film actors, has been in intense negotiations with several major video game companies, including Activision, EA, and Epic Games, since October 2022. The disputes center around demands for higher wages, better working conditions, and a fair share of the often high revenues generated by video games, especially in light of the growing concern that AI will increasingly replace their work.
In light of the rising demands for better working conditions in the gaming industry, many companies will likely now forego hiring unionized actors for motion capture or voice-over work.
“Although agreements have been reached on many issues important to SAG-AFTRA members, employers refuse to clearly and enforceably affirm that they will protect all artists covered by this contract in their A.I. language,” explains SAG-AFTRA.
President Fran Drescher (via Reuters) added:
“We will not agree to any contract that allows companies to misuse AI to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough. If these companies are serious about offering an agreement that our members can live with – and work under – we will be here and ready to negotiate.”
The video game industry generates around 200 billion U.S. dollars in revenue annually and continues to grow steadily. Behind this success is a whole ecosystem of creative minds who create captivating gaming experiences through their innovation and passion. This includes SAG-AFTRA members who bring unforgettable characters to life. They demand fair pay and a say in the use of their digital likenesses by AI.
And what does this have to do with GTA VI?
In light of these reports, concerns have arisen that the release of GTA VI could be further delayed and directly affected by this strike. However, there is reassurance on this front. While it is unclear which actors are participating in the strike, it is generally assumed that this part of the production for GTA VI has long been completed and is therefore not affected by the strike.
GTA VI is currently scheduled to be released at the end of 2025.
