“Red Dead Redemption” announces a return and takes a wind

The 13-year-old interactive western is announced for Switch and PlayStation 4. But the lack of a major overhaul and its price tag are making people cough.

It all started with rumors, those claiming that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive were imminently going to make available to gamers an updated version of “Red Dead Redemption”, first of the name, an interactive western of very high reputation released in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The fantasy machine was soon set in motion. The studio and the publisher have just put an end to the rumors and illusions by announcing the upcoming arrival of the title, on August 17, on Switch and on PS4 (therefore also on the PS5 via backward compatibility).

And there, general disappointment, it is a simple port of the PS3 and Xbox 360 version. No remastering, no 60 frames per second, no major overhaul, just the game as it was without its mode multiplayer but with its “Undead Nightmare” DLC. And all this for the modest sum of 49.99 euros (we bet on the same amount in Swiss francs).

Strong price without major improvements

Fans who were expecting something else were quick to voice their disappointment, with most of the voices raised on forums and other social media essentially denouncing the price of a 13-year-old game that hasn’t really been reworked. In other words, a dishonest way to force consumers to check out, or even re-checkout.

If some note the absence of an Xbox One version in this bogus communication operation, it is to better see that the Microsoft console does not really need it since the Xbox 360 version of the game is 100% compatible with the generation of machines that succeeded it as well as with the next generation (the Xbox Series X), with even improvements for this latest model. It runs perfectly on these consoles, free of charge by inserting the disc on the models which are equipped with a reader (all except the Xbox Series S) and is invoiced 29 francs for the dematerialized version offered in the shops. In other words, “Red Dead Redemption” has been playable on three generations of consoles for years. Reintroducing it in this state would therefore make no sense.
