Video game museum: crowdfunding raises more than a million euros

A video game museum project raised the incredible sum of 1.2 million euros in a few days on the KissKissBankBank platform. With this unexpected success, the project might indeed see the light of day.

A video game museum in Bussy-Saint-Georges in Seine-et-Marne? This somewhat crazy project is however on the verge of becoming a reality. Crowdfunding launched on September 20 on KissKissBankBank, called “Odyssey Project”exceeded the symbolic milestone of one million euros in the middle of last week and is fast approaching the sum of 1.2 million euros.

The figure may seem crazy, while the creators were simply hoping to obtain 50,000 euros to organize a beautiful temporary exhibition, and the sum risks rising even more as the crowdfunding will only end on November 5.

A meeting as a starting point

It all started with a meeting between YouTuber Benoît Theveny, better known as “Tev – Ici Japon” (1 million subscribers on the platform) and Ludovic Charles, a French collector, as Tev explains in a video posted on his channel.

The latter, a passionate collector, was gradually overwhelmed by the scale of his collection of more than 2,000 consoles and games, which occupied around 300 m2. A little overwhelmed, he had even considered selling it on eBay for almost a million dollars in 2022, before giving up. And the idea of making his collection accessible to as many people as possible tickled him from the start.

Even more interesting, this museum project is really very concrete. Artist views are already available, archivists and scenographers have worked on it for months, and the museum has received strong support since the town of Bussy-Saint-Georges says it is ready to welcome it in 2026.

It will be installed within a new fun center located at the entrance to the town, along the A4. It is useful to clarify that Tev and the co-creators of the project do not want a simple exhibition space.

Ideally, the museum will be an immersive experience installed in settings specially created for this place. Covering an area of 3,500 m² to 7,000 m² (depending on the money raised) the museum will be part of a “Japanese universe made up of several activities centered around Japanese culture”.

A restaurant, an arcade room, shops and a modular room are announced, as is a space for repairing and customizing consoles, which will make the Odyssey project an almost unique place.

It now remains to make such an ambitious project a reality. For several years, the creation of a video game museum has indeed been a sea serpent. L’association MO5, founded in 2003 and which has worked extensively for the preservation of digital heritage, has always worked in this direction. It already has a very fine collection “with a view to a donation the day a national museum opens”. For the moment, this project has never come to fruition and we hope for a more favorable destiny for the Odyssey Project.
