Computer systems, programming, 3D animation: nothing should escape him
The multimedia engineer is a professional with a solid interdisciplinary background, who knows and applies IT tools both for the creation of content and for its processing, storage, search and transmission. Indeed, multimedia engineering is a field of engineering that results from the combination of the disciplines and practices of computer engineering, electronics and telecommunications, with multimedia content. The multimedia engineer therefore works where the convergence of information technologies, communications and audiovisual means plays a key role.
The playing field: interaction
Among the areas that call upon his talents is the media. He works on the concepts, protocols, technologies, platforms and tools involved in the development of secure and reliable multimedia services, and on their diffusion across different types of communication networks.

Level of studies: bac +5
Gross monthly salary: €3,000 – €5,000 and more depending on experience
The development of virtual environments – notably virtual reality – is also an area of ” game ” on which the professional qualities of a computer and multimedia engineer are highly sought following. These are technologies which enable significant developments in different application contexts: video games, virtual visits, scientific visualization, design and manufacturing, medicine (notably telemedicine), training, among others. Everything that can constitute highly interactive and 3D systems.
More generalist than ultra-specialist
A multimedia engineer is required to coordinate the work of other, very specialized, engineers. He must therefore have in-depth knowledge in many areas, in addition to having excellent management skills and being able to provide everyone with precise specifications. The architecture of computer systems, programming, 3D animation, video game engines, the secrets of the Web: nothing should escape him. Legal notions, particularly around intellectual property issues, are also part of his background.
As the digital revolution continues to evolve businesses and industries, engineers with good knowledge of IT and multimedia are guaranteed to find work.

Interview with Hippolyte Guillemeteau
Holder of a DUT in computer science, he trained as a computer and multimedia engineer at Cnam-Enjmin. He joined Eytos, which is developing an augmented reality assistance solution for maintenance technicians.
The term computer engineer is quite broad. Can you tell us what computer and multimedia engineering includes?
The engineering sectorIT and multimedia” requires first of all to understand the word multimedia, which is defined by a technique integrating on the same support data of different natures (sound, text, image), which can be consulted interactively. It is therefore on the interactivity of the products that the computer science of our training comes to take on its meaning. We find the study of technologies linked to media, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, immersive technologies and 3D design, without forgetting the more traditional ones used in applications and video games that we come across every day.
What are the main issues you face, between the complexity of technologies and the need to deliver solutions aimed at the general public?
One of the problems concerns the delays linked to the exploitation of innovative technologies. Research and training on new technology can take time, and solutions may not exist. We need to find specialists in order to popularize it, make the subject accessible, and put in place documentation for other engineers. We must also succeed in putting ourselves in the place of the general public in order to develop for them, which is difficult when our daily lives are dedicated to constant reflection on the subject.
Technologies and media are constantly evolving. How do you maintain your knowledge?
For me, the most important thing is to stay informed regarding all the news through social networks or traditional and digital media. Video games or the news often bear witness to these developments. Certain innovations such as the metaverse or cryptocurrencies are criticized by the general public for their implementation, but remain interesting on a technical level, and may inspire other developments in the future. Above all, you must be able to offer current and new technologies to your client, not necessarily to master everything immediately.
What sectors are looking for IT and multimedia engineers? What does corporate learning bring?
Companies in the Web, simulation, video games, metaverse, augmented or virtual reality, or even animation sectors are all sectors that may be interested in our skills. The choice of companies is very open for work-study training and offers the experience of real projects in a professional environment. We obtain mastery of project management and people on a longer-term level than a student project. Learning from qualified professionals, regardless of their area of expertise, is also a huge advantage. Finally, this allows you to have a professional conscience, guarantees of employment or to be able to stay in your training company. Employers appreciate seeing that we are not without experience.
Can we summarize this training and this profession by saying that it is regarding being a versatile engineer, capable of making the link between complex technological constraints and marketing requirements?
Being an engineer means responding to product or process design problems while knowing how to manage the means and resources available. Marketing is one skill among others. In my case, it is above all a question of becoming familiar with the technologies used in many companies and of being versatile, capable of adapting to constraints.
