The rise of video games worldwide is so great that the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed its inclusion in the list of addictive disorders in the new edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), in force since this 1 January 2022.

According to the document issued, addiction to video games is evidenced as a pattern of behavior, in which there is deterioration of control over the game to the point of giving it priority over other interests or activities of daily life. The growing addiction to electronic games has negative consequences for the health of the individual.

The possibility of detecting and diagnosing the disorder is when the behavior pattern has as a consequence an alteration in the personal, social and family environment. The time established to confirm the diagnosis is when the changes in behavior are maintained for a period of 12 months.

Despite these diagnostic parameters, the organization reported that there are much more severe cases and for them the time to achieve a diagnosis is shorter.
