A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the New York area on Friday morning (local time), according to the USGS, shaking buildings and jolting residents in an area that rarely sees significant seismic activity.
The epicenter of the quake was near Wattyhouse Station in New Jersey, according to the USGS.
No property damage has been reported so far.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) measured the earthquake at 5.5 degrees. The earthquake had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, according to EMSC.

The earthquake, as reported by APE-MPE, was felt throughout the region, including New Yorkof New Jerseyher northern pennsylvania and western Connecticut, according to Reuters reporters and social media posts.

Charita Walcott, a 38-year-old resident of the Bronx, New York, said she heard “a violent hum that lasted regarding 30 seconds».
The FAA, the US Federal Aviation Administration, said many airline flights bound for New York City might be delayed 30 to 45 minutes due to the earthquake.
The Empire State Building’s Facebook page humorously wrote that “they are fine.”
