A Georgia woman went viral following sharing images of employees at a Popeyes restaurant in Atlanta who refused to let her buy food for a homeless man.
Jo Ortega, known as @thegirlyjo, published dos videos of the incident on TikTok which received more than 7 million views combined and something like 35,000 comments. This is one of the videos that the woman recorded:
Ortega, a student at Georgia State University, posted the video with the caption “CRAZY Popeyes in Atlanta wouldn’t let me buy homeless food!”
In the video, Ortega showed a man standing by the passenger-side door as she tried to order at the drive-thru window..
When Ortega asked to buy a two-piece dinner for the man, an employee closed the window and turned his back on him. He then asked to speak to a manager, but received no response.
“He’s asking for food,” said the Tiktoker. “No, ma’am, she can’t do it,” said an employee through the drive-thru window. “I don’t care if you record me baby.”
In another video, Ortega said the employees called the police following asking for their warrant.
“I can’t order anything for this homeless man who wanted food,” Ortega said as he flashed police lights behind his car. “He didn’t even ask for money and they were so rude. This is crazy”.
Ortega told Fox 5 Atlanta that she was “terrified” when she saw the police because she thought she might be arrested.
“The officer pulled me aside and said, ‘I really appreciate you doing that, thank you for buying him food. I appreciate it,’” Ortega told the news station.
Ortega was later able to contact the general manager of the store, who allowed her and the man to order their food free of charge, the outlet reported.
The video then shows the man, who gave his name as Jazz, holding a Popeyes drink. “The manager at Popeyes turned this lady down when she offered me something to eat,” the man said.
