That happens extremely rarely: A South Korean has crossed the heavily fortified border into North Korea. “Last night an unidentified person escaped over the eastern side of the demilitarized zone to North Korea,” said the South Korean military representative on Sunday. A search was started and it was not possible to confirm whether the person was still alive. The demilitarized zone separates North and South Korea. Crossing the border is illegal in South Korea. North Korea has closed its borders since early 2020 and implemented strict measures to fight Covid-19. There has only been a ceasefire between the two states since 1953.
