We are in the mid-1990s, the 962 is no longer eligible for the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Porsche does not intend to let the competition steal the show in Grand Touring. The problem: all-wheel drive is prohibited in competition, preventing the German manufacturer from aligning its 911 Turbo.
Thus was born the 911 GT type 993 – nicknamed 911 GT2 – which is what is called a “special homologation”, namely a car designed for the sole purpose of allowing a manufacturer to compete. . Schematically, it is a Turbo driven by a similar 3.6-litre flat 6 – apart from an increased boost pressure – only connected to the rear axle, which allows a gain of considerable weight.
Boasting a power of 430 horsepower in its first version (450 in its second), it is equipped with bolt-on fender extensions to accommodate racing tires, a rear spoiler and a new front blade, what give her an awfully sexy look. To be homologated, a small series of production models is produced.
Among them, very rare ClubSport (some speak of barely 20 copies), even more racy and devoid of any element of comfort! Enough to make it the most radical of all the 911s with an air-cooled engine. It is the latter that we offer here with, at the wheel, Benoît Tréluyer, who had already given us a great test of the Ferrari Monza SP2 (ICI). Seeing the latter take so much pleasure in reconnecting in particular with pure driving without any assistance is a real treat. Let’s go !
