VIDEO | An employee threatened by Islamophobic remarks at the Mail Champlain

An employee of Mail Champlain in Brossard was reportedly threatened with being expelled from her shop by a customer last Sunday in a video that is going viral on the Web.

In the video, a man verbally attacks an employee of a Mail Champlain store who wears the veil by making racist and Islamophobic remarks.

The man seems to approach the employee by telling her about Marine Le Pen, a French politician opposed to wearing the veil in public space.

He continued by claiming that he would soon be the owner of the mall and that she will be evicted since she wears the veil.

“We are going to do this in public and you will be obliged to mention your name and your birth certificate”, can we hear it in the video.

He then accuses the young woman of being “subject to Islam”.

“We don’t like that. I will make you squeal your camp. I’m going to close your shop, “he threatens, before the video cuts.

The young girl, throughout the exchange, seems to be trying to get him to leave.

TVA Nouvelles contacted Cominar, owner of Mail Champlain.

She called the remarks “unacceptable”.

“Sunday afternoon, a Mail Champlain customer made comments that we consider to be unacceptable and racist. As we do not tolerate this type of behavior at any of our properties, our security evicted this individual immediately. Cominar believes in diversity and better living in communities and supports the actions taken by the management of Mail Champlain,” said Julie Lajoye, spokesperson for Cominar, by email.
