Video accessories for iPhone (2/3): “creation” equipment to take a step forward

2023-07-04 18:33:34

The iPhone is a great tool for shooting videos. To make it even more powerful and creative, there are a plethora of specialized accessories. Here are our tips for making you suitable video equipment.

Compared to our first “passion” equipment, the second “creation” set is a little more serious in the sense that it offers greater freedom of creation and offers a much broader potential for evolution.

The “creation” equipment ????: rig with handles + removable ND filter + microphone + lamp + Filmic Pro application

the rig

The rig has a completely different philosophy than that of the gimbal. The stabilization and the horizontality of the device depend only on the good will of the operator… and on his skills too. The latter can adopt any position, the rig is there to ensure a certain protection and especially the presence of the typical accessories of a serious shooting.

The SmallRig rig accommodates any size smartphone and gives the videographer the freedom to add all the accessories they consider essential: light, microphone, battery, side or top handle, etc. Image SmallRig.

The advantages of the rig

One of the first jobs of a rig is to get your hands away from the camera. The risk of movement due to possible interference of the body with the case is thus reduced to a minimum. The handles systematically added to the rig allow for wider, more flexible, gentler and more precise gestures than if the smartphone was held directly in the hand. A top handle finally allows movements at ground level while facilitating transport between two planes.

A rig, like its handles, is generally lined with 1/4″-20 type perforations dedicated to receiving accessories with universal attachments. This is very useful for adding lighting, a microphone or even for put the whole thing on a tripod.

For a hundred euros, the SmallRig brand sells a fairly light model already decked out with its side and top handles. All you have to do is add a few accessories (light, microphone, drums, etc.) to have a set-up ready to shoot. Image SmallRig.

The faults of the rig

This type of “cage” is quite bulky, even when the handles are folded down. Its transport requires a bag. As for the weight, if it is not very high (539 grams), it is added to that of the smartphone and that of the accessories. Held at arm’s length, the device can become heavy following a few hours.

Since the rig is handled with the hands, it is up to the videographer to ensure the stability of the shots. Fortunately, the stabilization of the iPhone is particularly good. But the operator will still be well advised to respect the rules that favor a stable freehand image: arms tight along the body, apnea, flexible gestures, no ninja for tracking shots, etc. Finally, the use of slow motion helps stabilize shots shot with this type of material.

The modularity of the rig allows the shooting of vertical videos! Image SmallRig

During an outing in the streets of London, I unsheathed my SmallRig and my iPhone 13 Pro for some freehand shooting! I share the result here.

The video above was shot with this equipment: iPhone 13 Pro, SmallRig video rig, Filmic Pro app (4K ProRes 24 fps 1/50th s), Sandmarc variable ND filter, VideoMicro Rode
