There is a very special atmosphere in Glasgow’s Hampden Park. It is Ukraine’s first competitive game since war broke out in their home country three months ago. All guest players appear in this World Cup playoff semi-final in Scotland draped in Ukrainian flags. They are received with applause!
And this highly emotional game is not only a complete success in symbolic terms – as a sign of peace. Also sporty! The Ukraine beat the Scots 3-1 and can still hope for the World Cup ticket. On Sunday (6 p.m.) Wales are waiting as the last hurdle in the playoff final.
Scotland’s rebellion comes too late
The Ukrainians got off to a strong start in Glasgow, falling twice to the mighty keeper Craig Gordon before West Ham star Andriy Jarmolenko defeated him. The 1-0 following a great lifter is well deserved. Shortly following the break, Roman Yaremchuk (49th) made it 2-0.
The McGregor connection goal comes too late (81st). In added time, Artem Dovbyk even made it 3-1 – and thus definitely dashed the last Scottish hopes of extra time. Ukraine’s World Cup dream is alive! (mpe)
